#TheWashingtonPost has a pullout of the Searching for Maura graphic short story. This is the story of how Filipinos were used as a spectacle (and Smithsonian Institution experiment) for attendees at the St. Louis 1904 Worlds Fair. lnkd.in/ew6RS4-k It’s another potent example of how non-white bodies and cultures have, often, been viewed as curious objects to be viewed as anomalies and used as experiments instead of fellow members of humanity. The #HenriettaLacks story is another blatant example of scientific exploration that was “under wraps” for too long. Worse, her Black cells have made a difference for countless lives and her family was never compensated. The restoration/repair/restitution/reparations (whatever you choose to call it) was finally paid. lnkd.in/e76zGa5X Descendants of exploitation and past harm should be fairly compensated. How long Black and others wait for justice and justified compensation in America? These are two of a multitude of stories that should be TOLD, not banned from our children because it makes some folk adults feel bad. If you (preacher, priest, politician, parent, principal) feel “bad” about these truths, imagine how bad the descendants of these stories feel about having their stories buried, banned or criminalized.Work out your own guilt - but, not at the expense of those who have have to bear the pain & burdens in our bones. Your attempts to erase past harm from our history books will never erase the crimes from your soul.
