Position Overview
Position: Managing Director
Reporting to: Principal
Location: Bentonville, Arkansas
About the Position
The Alice L. Walton Foundation is seeking a skilled, highly motivated, and entrepreneurial individual to join the foundation as a Managing Director. The role will work closely with the Principal and organization to execute the charitable vision and goals of the Principal. The Managing Director will lead foundation operations, serve as a trusted advisor, and facilitate the assessment and reporting of fund impact. With the support of internal and shared service partners, they will ensure that Principal and organizational needs are met in an integrated, intuitive, and high-quality manner. The Managing Director will be a strategic operator with strong leadership skills and an implicit service orientation. Specific duties include:
Lead Foundation Operations
- Manage the operations of a lean, mission-driven organization and work in close collaboration with shared service partners such as accounting, legal, tax, IT, communications, and human resources, to achieve the Principal’s charitable goals
- Lead the execution and negotiation of complex grant-making opportunities in ways that align with the Principal’s vision.
- Oversee processes, resource-planning, budgets, and OKRs to ensure alignment with the Principal’s organizational vision. Regularly evaluate and refine the efficiency and efficacy of systems, processes, and organizational structure.
- Cultivate a supportive, inclusive, and equitable work environment. Ensure necessary staffing, resource tools, and infrastructure are in place to support organizational needs. Develop and grow the program and operations team.
- Review financial information and adjust grantmaking and operational budgets as needed.
Serve as a Trusted Advisor and Partner
- Possess the confidence and humility to effectively build credibility and relationships with the Principal and ecosystem and grantee partners; anticipate and respond to the needs and requests of the Principal; proactively serve as a thought partner to support informed decision-making.
- Seek and enable strategic opportunities to bridge individual funding or philanthropic initiatives into collective giving across charitable entities and existing funding partners to maximize impact.
- Liaise and partner with CEOs and senior leaders across various entities to coordinate and collaborate on joint charitable projects and initiatives.
- Serve as a connector between the organization and a broader family ecosystem.
Facilitate the Assessment of Impact and Reporting
- Lead the approach to measurement and evaluation to create a system that measures outcomes and assesses performance to ensure ROI.
- Manage reporting of charitable results to the Principal in a consistent and understandable format.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking an outstanding, seasoned Managing Director who brings considerable experience in a service-oriented organization. The ideal candidate possesses a deep knowledge of philanthropy operations and impacts investing with a mix of the following core competencies, experiences, and capabilities:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, relevant master’s degree or higher preferred.
- Robust professional experience as a leader in charitable impact, which may include time at a family office, charitable foundation, or consulting firm, as well as other experience in the philanthropic and/or nonprofit sectors.
- Significant experience in grant-making or philanthropy operations, including roles in fast-paced, highly complex organizations.
- Experience negotiating large grants, contracts, or financial transactions, including conducting due diligence and setting terms.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to translate and communicate complex topics in a variety of forums.
- Knowledge of financial and accounting principles, and experience with analysis of charitable investment merits, returns, and concerns.
