John Muir Health (JMH) is a $2.3 billion enterprise serving the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area with its 6,400 employees and 1,000 affiliated physicians. The health system provides healthcare services through two of the largest medical centers in Contra Costa County with 872 combined beds as well as complete inpatient and outpatient behavioral health programs and services at its fully accredited 73-bed psychiatric hospital and outpatient facility.

Position Overview

John Muir Health is seeking an experienced and accomplished fundraising executive to serve as the first Vice President of Philanthropy for the John Muir Health Foundation located in Walnut Creek, California. This is an opportunity at one of the most respected and progressive health systems in California. The Foundation will be even more instrumental in leveraging philanthropy to help position John Muir Health as a world-class health system.

Reporting directly to and working closely with Nevin Kessler, the Foundation President of John Muir Health Foundation, the Vice President of Philanthropy will lead the major and principal gifts, planned giving and corporate, foundation and government grants programs for John Muir Health. The Vice President will be expected to take the initiative in defining, setting and implementing the Foundation’s major gifts strategies and will be given the latitude to make strategic and tactical decisions for which they will be held accountable. The Vice President will work closely with the President to provide direction to Foundation programs, including staff development, campaign management, and board relations.

The Vice President will be expected to lead the development and planned giving programs to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward past and potential major and principal gift donors for financial support of clinical, research, teaching and outreach programs of JMH. The new leader will be expected to recruit and manage a team of development professionals and administrative support to fully realize the prospect potential of major and principal gift relationships as financial supporters of JMH. It is expected that the Vice President will lead by example while managing a portfolio of donors and potential donors.

JMH is seeking a candidate that has a track record of accomplishments in major/principal gift fundraising, advancing an organizational culture of philanthropy, aligning philanthropy with organizational strategy, and donor base growth. The base salary will be in the $250,000 – $300,000 range based on relevant experience and credentials. Additional compensation is offered in the form of short-term incentive as well as deferred compensation program.
