Position Overview

The Vice President of Development is responsible for directing all aspects of Planned Parenthood of Illinois’ (PPIL) development program and securing significant philanthropic resources from individuals and institutions to support PPIL’s initiatives around the state and in partnership with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). S/He will develop and execute the Development Department’s strategic plan and communicate the organization’s long-range strategic priorities to internal and external audiences.

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Development is an integral member of PPIL’s Senior Leadership Team and provides strategic input into all aspects of PPIL’s work. Key priorities include: board development, ensuring effective fundraising collaboration with PPFA, setting and achieving annual and restricted campaign fundraising goals across all philanthropic revenue streams, and staffing the fundraising efforts of the CEO. The Vice President of Development also supports fundraising efforts for Planned Parenthood Illinois Action—the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood in Illinois.

Essential functions:

1. Lead, inspire, and develop a team of fundraising professionals with direct supervision of two director level staff members. Responsible for staff recruitment, retention, setting team and individual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and ensuring proper investments in professional development and onboarding.

2. Serve on the Senior Leadership Team. Participate in designing and leading strategic initiatives and goals through cross-departmental collaboration to enhance overall performance in accordance with PPIL’s mission. Ably represent PPIL to external constituencies, including prospects, donors, institutional funders, community partners, volunteers, and other key stakeholders.

3. Manage partnership with PPFA to maximize mutual benefits of collaborative fundraising, including but not limited to: allocation of shared prospects, expenses, and division of labor; committee roles within federation to inform major and principal gifts strategy on a national level; partner on setting engagement strategies for select principal gift portfolio.

4. Oversee and track board participation in campaign and annual goals to ensure alignment between high-level volunteers and program goals. Set budget and fundraising objectives, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions, as necessary.

5. Provide leadership and engagement strategies to develop, onboard, and maximize board member impact with focus on the cultivation and solicitation of financial support from the private sector. Ensure the growth and strategic vision of the high-level volunteer base to meet the organization’s current and future fiscal needs. Create robust process for training and development of high-level volunteers and members of the board.

6. Manage and cultivate a portfolio of high-capacity donors, the size of which will be determined in consideration of shifting institutional priorities. Proper identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects and donors must be in place as this position will be responsible for securing the following types of support: general operating, restricted revenue from institutions and individuals, as well as complex, multi-year campaign commitments.

7. Direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements and ensure functional program meets commitments and is managed for ethical compliance with PPIL policies, procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements. Maintain a working knowledge of current tax laws, investment opportunities, and planned giving to maximize donor support and intent.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Ten plus years of demonstrated fundraising experience, with verifiable success across a broad range of fundraising programs, including annual fund, major and principal gifts, planned giving, foundations, special events, and capital campaigns. Track record of cultivating and closing 6-7 figure gifts.

Demonstrated capacity to build and maintain long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, board members, foundations, and corporations; Ability to recruit and train high-level volunteers; Campaign management experience.

Experience working in a large, complex, not-for-profit environment.

Proven experience in managing and mentoring both new and experienced fundraising staff, including staff recruitment and training.

Prior experience with fundraising software (experience with Salesforce a plus).

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Power Point).

Professional qualities: Demonstrated record of meeting professional goals and guiding staff to meet team goals. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships with donors and secure gifts. Aptitude for analysis, interpretation, and translation of information. Creativity and experience in the development of gift strategies, programs, and solicitation materials that will inspire donors. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Flexible enough to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Curious and thoughtful approach to work characterized by a desire to solve problems and continuously improve quality of work. Discretion in handling confidential information and materials. Commitment to reproductive health, education, and rights and ability to understand and explain PPIL programs and funding priorities to current and potential individual donors and institutional funders.
