Position Overview

Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) invites applications for full-time faculty positions at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline or Senior Lecturer in Discipline to teach in the school’s MS program in Nonprofit Management. This position will begin on January 1, 2019 or July 1, 2019. This is a full-time appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

The successful candidate will teach courses related to nonprofit management in one or more of the following areas:

a) Leadership and management theory and application in the nonprofit sector, including governance and ethics. Candidates specializing in leadership and management will be asked to teach a capstone course (i.e., an integrative course for students that combines skill sets across the nonprofit management curriculum for a substantial, client-based, group project overseen by faculty member).

b) Data analytics and performance metrics as applied to the nonprofit sector, as well as data asset management. Candidates specializing in data analytics may be asked to teach a capstone course (see above for description).

c) Innovation in the nonprofit sector, including social entrepreneurship, new forms of philanthropy, collaborative undertakings among private, governmental and nonprofit sectors. Candidates specializing in innovations in the nonprofit sector may be asked to teach a capstone course (see above for description).

Successful candidates must be able to teach across modalities, including on campus, hybrid (combined on campus and online), and entirely online courses.

The ideal candidate will hold a master’s degree, terminal degree, or its professional equivalent, in nonprofit management or philanthropy, law, fundraising, public administration, business administration, applied statistics, data science, or another area related to nonprofit management; and exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship. Candidates should have background both as a practitioner and scholar, including at least five years of applied experience working in the nonprofit sector. Candidates with managerial experience in higher education programs should include descriptions of such experience in their CV.

Candidates at the rank of Senior Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have substantial professional experience and accomplishments, a superlative record of teaching as a lecturer, and documented evidence of excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities.

Candidates at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field.
